Today I'm welcoming Ellora's Cave author Ju Dimello. I'm handing over my keyboard, so she can tell us a bit about her debut release, Fiery Icicle. Welcome Ju!
Thanks so much, Joanne, for hosting me in your blog
to celebrate my debut release!
I
love it, like any other writer, when the characters come to me fully formed,
right down to the smallest detail. And chances of that are like winning a
lotto. It’s so easy to write a “perfect” character, simply because perfection
is boring. There, I said it! Honestly, how would you like to spend time with a
perfectly groomed man, who keeps his things so tidy, spotless? Being in the
same room with him is enough to give me jeebies of whether I’m the “dirty one”
by simply being myself or the “odd one out” because I took a late bath?
:Shudders: He might seem more like an alien to me than someone real (even
paranormals are real in my story J) Usually I end up doing a lot more research to
ensure they have some flaw, or something that makes me connect to the
character, to the extent that I miss them when I finish writing their story! I
loved Nathan (the demon) in Fiery Icicle because he knew which buttons to push,
whereas Zach knows the word, apology, thereby making me love him too. (Just
don’t say that to Madeline, the heroine, okay?)
How
about you? Any memorable characteristic from a recent book or film that stood
out for you? Made you feel connected with the hero / heroine? Let me know in
the comments.
I have one copy of Fiery Icicle to giveaway
during the blog tour and every comment during this week will count towards it.
I’ll pick a winner around the 15th of April and contact them! Don’t
forget to leave your email id.
Blurb
and Excerpt:
I thought I’d share a short
version of the blurb and excerpt here, while a longer one can be enjoyed at : http://www.jasminejade.com/p-10002-fiery-icicle.aspx
This
story contains a half-fae intent on claiming his woman, a half-demon bent on
resisting her and a passion that's hot enough to melt the alpine snow
Excerpt:
Black suited him—both his hair and the full-sleeved shirt he wore
over his rippling muscles. She tried not to be affected by his smoldering gaze,
undressing her sure and steady. She needed to get rid of him and fast.
“Give me the tickets and get going. I don’t need a damn
babysitter.”
His eyes darkened and took on a dangerous glint as his jaw
clenched. In that instant, he appeared nothing like the sinful, delicious demon
he portrayed himself as, but one who’d have no qualms about throwing her over
his shoulders as though she was a sack of potatoes, if needed.
“Believe me. I didn’t want to be one either. But the choice isn’t
mine. Zach wants you safe. So it’s either with me or with me. Choose.”
Felt like slapping him

Welcome Ju!
ReplyDeleteHello, Joanne and Ju! Characters are my favorite part of novels. Of course I want a compelling plot, too, but I think the more dynamic the characters the more exciting the plot! So I'm always striving to write unique, memorable characters. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite literary characters are Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery and Scarlett O'Hara from Gone with the Wind!
Hope you both are having a great week!
I really liked Grace and Khalil from Thea Harrison's, Oracle's Moon.
ReplyDeleteAfter the death of her sister, Grace is now the sole caretaker of her niece and nephew. Grace is now all about family, and I loved her strength and her humor.
Khalil is a Djinn, who starts out cold and unyielding. So watching him melt around her kids, learning how to laugh and tease, was such an inspiring transformation, and I couldn't help but root for these two.

Thanks for having me at your blog, Joanne!
ReplyDeleteLaura! They are wonderful characters, especially Scarlett!! Thanks for your wishes!
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy,
ReplyDeleteGreat to "meet" you again! Grace and Khalil sounds wonderful! I haven't read Thea's work, but i am going to add it to my TBR!
Thank you for sharing your favorite characters!
I'm going to add Fiery Icicle to my Goodreads To Read shelf. Good luck with your blog tour and your debut novel!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by, Lisa!
ReplyDeleteI never did answer your question. I'm definitely a character reader and writer. The most recent book I've read where the characters stood was Fifty Shades of Grey. It was told in first person, from the heroine's POV, but it was the hero that got me. He was very real for me, and that's what I hope I put into my book. But another favorite of mine is Jamie Fraser, from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander. Movies, it would have to be John Coffey, from The Green Mile.
ReplyDeleteI too added your book to my "to read" list on Goodreads. I look forward to reading it! Love the excerpt. I don't want to slap him. Actually, I like him. What he says shows quite a lot about his character.
Thanks so much, Joanne!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing so much about 50 shades of grey that I'm almost afraid I'll add it to my teetering TBR right away :) I love the Outlander too!
Thank you for liking my demon already :)
It's important to me that my heroes have some kind of flaw. In my current WIP, the hero has burn scars down one arm and the side of his back. This helps to create an interesting back story and gives him an insecurity that he wouldn't otherwise have. It makes him seem more real to me.

Hi Sandra,
ReplyDeleteYou're right! A hero with a burn would surely have a way that would impact the way he sees things! That sounds really interesting! Thanks for stopping by!
