Meet My Characters Blog Hop--Meet Kyle Morgan, hero from Risking It all

Hey guys! I was invited to this blog tour by Karen Michelle Knutt. It’s all about characters. :) You can read her post here.

A little about Karen:

Karen Michelle Nutt resides in California with her husband, three fascinating children, and houseful of demanding pets. Jack, her Chorkie, is her writing buddy and sits long hours with her at the computer.

When she’s not time traveling, fighting outlaws, or otherworldly creatures, she creates pre-made book covers to order at Gillian’s Book Covers, “Judge Your Book By Its Cover”. You can also check out her published cover art designs at Western Trail Blazer and Rebecca J. Vickery Publishing.

Whether your reading fancy is paranormal, historical or time travel, all her stories capture the rich array of emotions that accompany the most fabulous human phenomena—falling in love.

So, the idea to this blog is we choose one character from a work-in-progress or a recently published book. I’m choosing instead to highlight a character from an upcoming book.

1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?
--Since I'm particularly fond of heroes, I’m choosing Kyle Morgan from Risking It All, and he’s purely fictional, but shhh!…don’t tell him that. I’m not sure any of my characters know they’re not real. They keep insisting that they are. ;)

2) When and where is the story set?
--Current day. Set in Puyallup (pronounced, or so we were told when we moved here, "pew-Al-up", though I've heard people pronounce it "pew-all-up," too.), Washington. Which just so happens to be where I live. :)

3) What should we know about him/her?
--Kyle is a detective for a local police department. He’s known the heroine, Cecelia, for most of their lives. Since he was ten. She’s his best friend, the one person he goes to when he has a crappy day. They’ve been telling each other everything for over twenty years.

4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?
--Kyle’s in love with Cecelia. The problem is, he’s keeping a secret from her. Three years prior, she asked him to dig up information about her parents. Unfortunately, what he uncovered wasn’t what he expected to find. Ceci was a witness to her parents’ murder, but she doesn’t remember. Her mind locked those memories away. So he took the information to her grandmother first, who made him promise never to tell Ceci. He made the promise with all the best of intentions, because he agreed, at the time, that it was best for Ceci.

Staying away from her, however, becomes increasingly difficult when he begins to realize that Ceci has feelings for him, too. He isn’t so sure anymore that he made the right decision three years ago. Did he really have the right to decide she wasn’t strong enough to handle the information he uncovered? Which means he has a very big decision to make. Does he tell her the truth and risk their friendship? Risk finding out the information really was too much for her to handle? She already suffers from PTSD; her parents’ death already causes her stress. She just doesn’t realize it. His conflict is compounded by the fact that she’s pregnant. Her stress could potentially effect her unborn child as well.

5) What is the personal goal of the character?

--Kyle’s goal goes hand in hand with the main conflict. On the surface, his goal almost looks like he wants to continue lying to Ceci, but really, his goal is more to protect her. The things he uncovered have the potential to destroy her, and all he really wants is for her to be happy and to stay healthy.

He’s also determined to take responsibility for Ceci's baby. The real father has walked out on her. His own father walked out on them when he was young, and he thinks Ceci's child deserves a father who will be there for him/her, and that she deserves someone who will be there for her

6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

--The title is Risking It All. This book was previously published under the title Staking His Claim. The book has since gotten a complete overhaul. It's been revised, re-edited and expanded (this baby got a whopping 20,000 words during the revision process). It also got a few new small plot twists. ;) Honestly, with the superb work my editor has done, to me, this book no longer resembles the book it started as. I have to tell you, watching it blossom was an amazing process for me.

Here’s the blurb:

She’s everything he wants…

For years, Kyle Morgan has hidden his true feelings from the gorgeous girl next door that he grew up loving and protecting. But when she shows up at his apartment in the middle of the night, desperately needing comfort and support, his iron will begins to waver…

…and the only thing he can’t bear to lose.

Kyle was always the big brother Cecelia Anton never had, but suddenly her goofy best friend has become a sexy man she can’t keep her thoughts—or hands—off of. As their deep connection melts into uncontrollable desire, Ceci is willing to put it all on the line for a shot at true love. Only Kyle is keeping a terrible secret about Ceci’s past that could destroy not only their lifelong friendship but their happily-ever-after…

7) When can we expect the book to be published?
Risking It All releases Sept 16th. You can find the buy links on Penguin’s site:

And now for the fabulous authors who have graciously accepted my invite to this tour. All of them are fellow agency authors, repped by the fabulous Dawn Dowdle. They'll be sharing their characters on August 11th. So, be sure to check their blogs/websites next Monday!

  1. I love this blog tour! Looks like fun. How can I get involved?

    1. Hi Marianne! It was a lot of fun, actually! Normally, you get invited by someone to participate. At least, that's how I was. You might contact Dixie Brown. I know she was looking for authors to participate, but I don't know if she ever found any.

  2. Joanne,
Thanks for participating in the Meet the Character Blog Tour. It's been fun reading everyone's new and upcoming books.

Your upcoming release sounds great. I like it when the characters have been friends for a long time before they fall in love. Sounds like Kyle will have to tell Cecelia the truth. Should prove interesting. I wish you the best of luck with your new release!

    1. Hi Karen! Thanks for inviting me. It was fun! I'm soooo sorry I didn't stop by yours. I read it, got busy and meant to come back to leave a comment and it completely slipped my mind. At any rate, this has been really fun. I enjoyed learning about your character as well!

Tell me what you think!
